Steve has 17 years of experience working in addictions treatment. He graduated from the University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work in 2008. During and after completion of his degree, he worked for the University of Colorado’s ARTS Synergy Program. After working in the adolescent PHP Milieu at Synergy during his graduate studies he transitioned to in home family therapy utilizing the Multisystemic Family Therapy model. In 2010, Steve started working at the Department of Veteran’s affairs as the Substance Use Disorder Specialists in the HUD VASH Program. After a couple years working in this capacity, he transitioned into the Substance Abuse Treatment Program. Steve held many roles in this program, including Acting Clinical Director, Program Manager of the MAT Program, Senior Social Worker, etc. He was provided training and 6 months of focused consultation in many therapeutic models: Prolonged Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy, CBT for SUD, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Motivational Enhancement Therapy. Near the end of his time at VA Steve was one of only a few providers in Denver that specialized in treating Veterans with co-occurring SUD and PTSD. Additionally, he led multiple efforts in his career to re-design and implement the SUD IOP curriculum for the VA System. During his time at the VA, Steve helped manage patients being tapered off of prescription benzodiazepines. For years veterans were frequently offered these medications for anxiety despite many bad outcomes.

In April of 2020 Steve joined the Gallus Medical Detox team opening the Littleton, CO clinic. He has redesigned the clinical care provided to patients incorporating Motivational Interviewing, Measurement Based Care, family support, and a hands-on approach to aftercare planning. Steve transitioned to the role of Executive Clinical Director in August of 2020. Steve has helped cultivate better community perceptions around benzodiazepine tapers. The evidence supports the need for longer tapers in patients that have been on higher doses for longer periods of time. He is committed to educating and supporting treatment providers on the need to more slowly taper folks and move away from stigmatizing these patients as “med seeking.”

In 2017, Steve began as an Adjunct Professor in the University of Denver’s Graduate School of Social Work. He has taught, designed, and piloted many courses: Assessment of Adults with the DSM V, Intersections of Mental Health Substance Use and Trauma, Clinical Skills, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mental Health and Substance Use Policy, and Telemental Health. Steve serves on the DU Curriculum Committee and has helped design/pilot three courses: Intersections of Mental Health Substance Use, Virtual Field Experience, and Trauma and Telemental Health. Steve is passionate about teaching and has mentored, supervised, and train many students, interns, and employees throughout his career.

Prior to his education and work in the clinical field, Steve was a Trainer and Lead Instructor for Outward Bound. In the early to mid-2000s he led Paddling, Backpacking, and Dogsledding Courses in wilderness settings for Outward Bound. He is father to two children and has been married for 13 years. In his free time now, he can be found fly fishing, skiing, hiking, or in a hot yoga class.
